During the month of February, the 1st-2nd grade class was introduced to sight-reading music using solfege. Sight-reading music means singing or playing a piece of music that you have not seen before, “at sight”. This concept builds upon the Kodály hand signs we used last semester. In conjunction with this, our class has been learning more about how to produce a healthy vocal sound!
We also worked on honing our ability to recognize and recreate various types of musical expression such as short-long, high-low, pretty-ugly, and slow-fast. Additionally, students learned about spirituals and gospel music in celebration of Black History Month!
Students also had the opportunity to play Remo Drum Shapes, Remo Children’s Drums, and auxiliary percussion instruments via creating their own rhythmic phrases, echoing rhythms, rounds, and games!
I think one of the student’s favorite part of this month’s lessons was getting to create choreography for one of our songs, “Hallelujah (Your Love is Amazing)”. They worked in small groups to create motions that reflect a specific portion of text.
