BMC Children’s Music Classes Implement Howard County Music Education Objectives

Music Education Junior, Sandie Goldstein of Towson University is putting her education to use at Bethany Music Center as the 3rd – 5th Grade Music Teacher.  Ms. Goldstein creates her unique lesson plans by combining faith based and popular songs with specific music education objectives outlined by the Howard County Public School System.

In class on January 25th, the students in Ms. Goldstein’s class explored the major and minor modes, as is established in the Howard County Objective:III.A.2.0: Develop awareness of the characteristics of musical sounds, Grade 3, Section B: Listen to and perform musical selections, identifying major and minor modes.  In order to do so, the students listened to popular tunes such as “Happy Birthday” and “The Star Spangled Banner” played in both major and minor modes, identifying the difference aurally.  The students then practiced identifying major and minor scales played on the piano, as well as major and minor chords.  Continuing with the Grade 5, Section B.: Perform and discuss musical selections in a variety of modalities intended for performance, the class discussed as a group how various selection in the major and minor modes from our repertoire sounded differently and how the sounds reinforced the message (text) in the music.
